Del Mar's Pacific Classic Runs This Saturday

Del Mar runs the Pacific Classic on Saturday, the race that's anchored the summer meet since 1991, when longtime Del Mar Thoroughbred Club board chairman John Mabee pushed to create a true million-dollar race on the West Coast. The purse dipped for a few years and came back to that same $1,000,000 mark in 2021, and it's a Win and You're In qualifier, so whoever crosses first gets an automatic spot in the Breeders' Cup Classic that fall.
Gates open at noon and first post is 2pm, with the Pacific Classic running later in the card as the day builds toward it. The first winner back in 1991 was Best Pal, who happened to be owned by Mabee himself. Expect the paddock and the rail three deep by early afternoon.
Super Girl Surf Festival Turns 20 at the Oceanside Pier

Super Girl Surf Festival hits the Oceanside Pier this weekend for its 20th year, and it's come a long way from where it started. The whole thing began in 2007 as a small women's surf jam in Mission Beach, and two decades later it's grown into a three-day festival with more than 150 pro surfers competing alongside athletes in nine other sports. Everything runs free, from the surf heats off the pier to the beach volleyball and skate competitions on the sand.
Iration, Hippie Sabotage, B.o.B, and K.Flay all play the Amphitheater across the three days, and while admission is free, you do need to register in advance for a concert ticket since the space fills up. The festival runs Friday through Sunday with vendors, a roller rink, and fitness classes filling out the village around the competitions.
Until next time,
