🍺 Stone's Founders Take Back Their Escondido Bistro

Diners inside the glass-walled Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens in Escondido

Greg Koch and Steve Wagner, who started Stone Brewing in 1996, have taken back Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens in Escondido, weeks before it was set to close. They sold Stone to Sapporo in 2022, and when Sapporo sold the brand to Firestone Walker and Duvel Moortgat this May, the bistro wasn't part of the deal. In August Sapporo said it would close in November unless the right operator came along.

It serves its last guests under the Stone name on Nov. 13, then reopens as an independent restaurant with a new name and beer from breweries across the craft scene. The founders say the rest is still on the whiteboard. The 57,000-square-foot spot, with its glass bistro and an acre of gardens, opened in 2006. Learn more

⚽ The Wave Pitch a Soccer Stadium at the Del Mar Fairgrounds

San Diego Wave FC players running past a team banner at practice

The family that owns the San Diego Wave asked the fairgrounds board on Oct. 13 to let them redevelop part of the Del Mar Fairgrounds around a 12,000- to 16,000-seat stadium for the women's soccer team. The concept adds a 300-room hotel, a convention center, a garage for about 1,300 cars, shops, restaurants and a tram to the planned train platform. The owners say the racetrack and the county fair would stay.

The drawings are conceptual, and no site studies have been done. The Wave play at Snapdragon Stadium now, where they're last in line behind SDSU football, San Diego FC and concerts. Their timeline has the stadium opening in 2031, and the family wants a two-year exclusive negotiating period, which could go on the board's November agenda. Learn more
