🌊 Sand Replenishment Begins at Ponto Beach
South Ponto Beach is getting wider starting this week as crews begin moving sand from the nearby Batiquitos Lagoon to the shoreline. The sand is a byproduct of the railroad bridge replacement project at the lagoon, part of a larger effort to add a second set of tracks and improve rail service through North County.
Over the next couple of years, up to 60,000 cubic yards of sand could be added to the beach, with some already used to support endangered California least tern nesting areas. Residents should expect increased truck traffic along Coast Highway 101 between La Costa Avenue and Poinsettia Lane, mostly on weekdays from 7am to 5pm, with occasional lane closures and parking impacts near Ponto.
🦒 Seniors Get Free Admission to Safari Park in February
February is Seniors Free Month at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, giving guests ages 65 and older free admission all month long. The Escondido-based park spans 1,800 acres and is home to more than 3,000 animals, along with one of the largest botanical collections in the region.
New this year, the Safari Park is introducing a Seniors Free Mobility Map to make visits more accessible, highlighting walking paths by difficulty level, shuttle routes, and mobility-friendly features. A valid photo ID is required, parking is not included, and the park is open daily from 9am to 5pm. Learn more here.
