🚦 Carlsbad Village Traffic Safety Plan Approved

Speeding and pedestrian safety have been ongoing concerns in Carlsbad's historic Barrio neighborhood, particularly around Jefferson Elementary School. After months of community input and several design revisions, City Council took decisive action last night. More details here.

  • Context: The original plan called for five traffic circles, but resident feedback pushed for simpler solutions that would still effectively calm traffic while maintaining emergency response times.

  • What Happened? Council unanimously approved "Option 1" with key additions, featuring a central traffic circle, 42 crosswalks, flashing pedestrian signals, and - after passionate resident testimony - a crucial new stop sign at Roosevelt and Chestnut. "We bike to school every day... my son feels unsafe crossing," shared one Madison Street resident.

  • What's Next? Final engineering design begins immediately, with construction plans and costs returning to Council in November. The project will be coordinated with needed water and sewer infrastructure improvements to minimize disruption. Chief Calderwood reminds drivers that vehicles must wait for pedestrians to completely cross before entering any crosswalk - even if the pedestrian is halfway across.

Until next time,
